Pocketful of Rainbows: A Novel

The Frightening Story Behind the Story Of the Psychedelic Sixties…

Avery Brisbane is anything but your typical hippie. He’s literally a man on a quest – a seeker, but he can’t quite talk about it. . .

It’s the flowering of the counterculture in late 1960s Southern California. The tension within society has grown so intense and terrifying that it could just rip you to pieces at any moment. And Avery is caught right in the midst of it. He’s truly “the man” in the hippie scene, but he still lives at home with his conservative parents.

After dropping out of Stanford in his last semester for apparently no reason at all during the hippie “tune out” craze, he comes back home to Hawthorne, California and gets a job at a record store in Venice Beach. And trying to explain all this to his no nonsense, Republican father is a ridiculous battle that only escalates by the day.

But Avery is a young man who will not be denied in his personal quest. He fights back and ventures forth, putting himself further into the heart of the counterculture with more lifestyle choices that will only guarantee he will become a prime target for anyone within “The Establishment” and their rules as they wage a vicious assault on the hippie dream…

And, if that wasn’t enough to wrestle with, Avery has also developed an unexpected love interest – or, to be more frank – a love obsession, way on the other side of town in Beverly Hills. In some of his free time he goes to watch her. Stalking isn’t exactly the word he would like to use, but it is definitely something he feels a bit out of control with.

Her name is Olivia Rackham and to Avery she is simply a goddess beyond words, trapped in a palace with her pug Daisy. Her father is the apex of high society in Southern California, being the majority owner of a sprawling business empire of oil, banks, and anything else he can manage to gobble up and control – including the personal life of his young daughter. Olivia is stifled by a world that she cannot relate to, living a desperately sheltered life and longing for freedom, individuality and something more tangible than shifting bank balances, stock quotes and murky business deals.

Avery, however, feels completely hopeless to the situation – he’s trapped in a different way. Compared to her he is merely a street urchin. How could he possibly enter her world?

But fate seems to intervene and Avery’s whole life takes a sudden turn out of bounds. His world simply ignites into a wild series of fortuitous events that pulls you in and takes you on a crazy trip through kaleidoscopic corners of the counterculture, unspoken halls of the super rich, a heart-pounding situation so convoluted, twisted and dangerous that it is truly hard to imagine, and finally – a frightening secret about Avery that will leave absolutely speechless. . .

A FEW WORDS FROM THE AUTHOR...

I’m going to break character and switch to the first person now. My name is Adam Ramos, and as I’m sure you’ve figured out at this point – I am a self-published author. I think it a waste of time and an insult to your intelligence to write a bio like this in a stuffy third person voice – acting as if it were being thrown together by some nebulous publishing company. For now, it is just me – a guy on the fringe.

And, no, I don’t have legions of rave reviews from the usual suspects in the “legacy media” machine and luminaries of the publishing world to convince you of what you should or should not be reading.

I am a writer born and raised in Alexandria, Virginia and went to the College of William and Mary. I’ve spent the majority of my life in the south. And, it has been quite a wild life at times. . .

My artistic or writing journey began shortly after I got out of school and played guitar, sang and wrote songs for a local rock band called The Castle.

After some time in the music world, I became involved in marketing and advertising as a professional copywriter. From there, I began experimenting with story ideas.

Pocketful of Rainbows is my second novel and was released in March 2023. You may be asking yourself how or why someone my age would even bother writing something about the psychedelic sixties – well, that is a fair question. Yes, I wasn’t there when it all happened, but I have lived with that period and culture for most of my life. It has been a daily companion for longer than I can remember – the music, the movies, the political tracts, novels, television – it has become a part of my being. I have absorbed all of it for so long that it felt very natural and somewhat necessary to portray here in this book. That’s my excuse. Now, whether or not I got it right – I’ll let you be the judge.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

This book is most definitely a page-turner that you will not want to put down! Just when you think you know the characters; what they are about, and even what they are into – you really don’t. They are revealed to us layer by layer. The time frame, background, and scenes are so very accurate, especially if you have lived through it!”
